Automated applications are slowly killing the job market. And not enough people are talking about it.
Candidates can now apply for 100 jobs in the time it used to take to properly apply for five. As an IT recruitment agency in Ireland, we're not convinced that's helping anyone: not candidates, not employers, and certainly not hiring managers who just want to find a good person.
11,000 Applications a Minute
The scale is hard to overstate. LinkedIn has reported around 11,000 job applications submitted every minute, a 45% increase in a year [1], driven in part by AI tools that write CVs, generate cover letters and auto-apply to roles in bulk.
Ireland is feeling it directly. Morgan McKinley told The Irish Times that a business analyst role that might once have attracted 100 to 150 applications recently received more than 2,000, many within the first 24 to 48 hours [2].
Plenty of those applications are irrelevant. Some come from people who haven't read the job spec. And a growing number have been fired off automatically, with no human decision behind them at all.
Bots Applying, Bots Rejecting
So employers respond the only way they can at that volume: with more automated screening.
According to IrishJobs, 78% of Irish employers now use AI in their recruitment process, up from 28% just a year earlier [3]. Reviewing CVs and applications is one of the most common uses. A Greenhouse survey of recruiters in Ireland, the UK and Germany found that 38% spend half their effort filtering out junk, spam or completely unqualified applications [2].
Which leaves us in a slightly ridiculous situation: technology applying for jobs, and other technology rejecting the applications. Some candidates are now hiding instructions in their CVs to try to trick AI screeners [2]. It's an arms race, and nobody is winning.
Who Loses? Almost Everyone
- Good candidates get buried. 73% of Irish workers say they struggle to secure interviews, and 65% never receive anything beyond an automated reply [4].
- Hiring managers get noise instead of choice. More applications don't mean more good applications.
- Employers risk filtering out the right person. Only 21% of hiring managers are confident their systems aren't rejecting qualified candidates [5].
- Trust erodes on both sides. Just 8% of job seekers believe AI makes hiring fairer [5].
Where AI Genuinely Helps Recruitment
To be clear, we're all for using AI in recruitment. We use technology every day, and there are parts of the process it makes considerably better: scheduling, market mapping, admin, and getting feedback to candidates faster. In Ireland, 52% of recruiters say manual admin tasks slow hiring down [3], and that's exactly where automation earns its place.
Regulation is catching up too. The EU AI Act treats AI used to screen and rank job candidates as high-risk, bringing requirements for transparency and human oversight. That's a useful reminder that recruitment decisions should still have a person behind them.
But volume isn't the same as quality. Applying for 200 jobs shouldn't be easier than properly researching and applying for 10.
How IT Recruitment Agencies in Ireland Can Make Applications Mean Something Again
Recruitment still works best when there's intent behind it: the right person, the right role and a genuine reason to have a conversation. Here's what that looks like in practice.
For employers:
- Write specific job ads with real detail, so the right people self-select in and others self-select out.
- Add one or two short, role-specific questions that an auto-apply tool can't answer well.
- Keep a human in the loop for shortlisting decisions.
- Use specialist recruiters and targeted headhunting for hard-to-fill tech roles rather than relying on volume.
- Commit to responding. Silence damages your employer brand.
For candidates:
- Apply for 10 roles properly rather than 200 automatically.
- Tailor your CV to the role and show you've read the spec.
- Build a relationship with specialist recruitment consultants in Dublin or your area who know your market.
Making Applications Mean Something Again
Maybe the next big improvement in recruitment isn't making it easier to apply. Maybe it's making applications mean something again.
We'd love to hear from hiring managers and candidates on this. Is automation helping you, or just adding noise?
If you're hiring in tech and tired of wading through volume, or you're a candidate who wants a real conversation about your next move, talk to TRC. As an IT recruitment company in Ireland, we put people, not bots, at the centre of every hire.
